tw: abuse, mental illness, self-harm adjacent incidentthe butterfly effect starts with dabi being the first born child to two parents in an arranged marriage. being the first born child, many of the pressures typically fall on you and this was no different. their father looked at them as a smaller unit of him and touya seeked to feed into that. ze wanted nothing more than to make his father look at him with pride and adoration. it never was exactly that though. as years went by, touya strived academically and socially, but his father only grew aggressive and colder and touya grew sicker the more he pushed himself. his parents went on to have 3 more children and the youngest seemed to take all of the attention. touya grew resentful and obsessive. he even went so far as to commit an act of arson in the nearby woods, setting himself on fire, and ending up hospitalized. his mother was devastated and his father seemed somewhat upset as well but touya didn’t notice as that was the last time he saw them for a while.the rest of his teenage years went by in a flash. he was raised in a facility with other kids just like him, and is now in psychiatric remission. it still doesn’t stop them from the adrenaline rush of setting fires, stealing from stores, and slashing tires along the streets. the end of the butterfly effect is when ze changes his name to dabi and is happiest when he’s running from something.

tw: drug addiction, memory issuesin juniper hollow, residing amongst his books and lamps, daniel molloy reflects on the life he's lived so far. where did it all go wrong? was it the overwhelming amount of drugs he did in his 20s? the many trips to rehabs that led up to the finality? is that when his memory issues started?he remembers his first wife and how he was far more in love with her than his second one. did he fuck that one up before or after she told him she was pregnant and he brushed her off for his book?at what stage in their lives did his two daughters begin to resent him? how many ballet performances did he miss? which one of them asked him to show up for the school's fatherdaughter dance that he was entirely too busy for? when was the last time he called despite their unofficial no contact agreement?was he ever actually happy with his second wife? god, he really needs to organize these stacks of books. especially the one next to that chair. he doesn't even sit in that chair, why didn't he just put them on the cushion? why does it feel like he's forgetting something?it always feels like he's forgetting something. comes from getting old probably. this essay sucks and he should fail the student writing it but he doesn't want to see their face again next year. why did he agree to teaching again? he's won two pulitzer prizes which definitely makes him above this.it's getting late. how many lamps to turn off again? 13. he has 13 lamps. he fucked up 2 marriages. he fucked up 2 daughters. but he stayed a journalist. because that's who he is at his very core, and nothing else. he is a bright young reporter with a point of view.in another life, these are the words you'll hear in your mind like a tape, playing over and over again.listen as though i’m the voice of god or an angel talking to you, telling you: this room doesn’t matter, this night doesn’t matter. you’re not inconsequential, or a junkie, you’re a bright young reporter with a point of view. there are stories that need to be told.
if things ever get bad again, these are the words you’ll hear in your mind like a tape playing over and over, like a song stuck in your brain. these words will hold you up, and carry you. they are your lifeline.
